The mystery
Sol Duc and Elwha study the mystery of the sweat pants cords. Why do they move so intriguingly sometimes and at other times lie on the floor and do nothing?
Maybe
You could be a cat
Independent
A bit snotty
Refusing to share your thoughts
Keeping your secrets
Enjoying refusing to answer questions
Macavity the mystery cat
when something happens
He’s never there
You could be an elk
Guarding the herd
While the elder ladies
Lead it through the woods
At certain times of year
You bugle
And want them
And they/we/I mew
And you find me
And we both enjoy it
Very much
I am a cat too
independent
I will travel alone
If you won’t travel with me
I will find other music
If you won’t play with me
I enjoy it when you come round
Very much
I keep my claws sharp
Just in case I need them
If I long for cuddles and purring
That is my problem
I am a lady elk
Confident in the woods
I let you do the guarding and bugling
While I lead the herd
Up and over the ridges
The spine of the mountain
The spines of the dragons
Elwha and Sol Duc
I know them well
I hear you bugle
And think about whether this time
I will mew
Or not
I have found new forage
And the loggers are changing the forest
You bugle anyhow
Even if I am distracted
I like to work
But I like to mew too
Maybe we will come together
Now and then
Cats
or elks
or humans
Maybe.

My father read me T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats when I was little. He loved Macavity the mystery cat, called the Hidden Paw. And my goodness, the cat outfits in this show are quite something!
Taken in 2016, mushrooming with a friend.
The flight appears
the dragons have lost their heads
they flame indiscriminately
but since they have no heads
the flame does not appear here
they loop in the air
in formation
and are beautiful
nearly silent
no heads to scream
just their wings
on the wind
we stand transfixed
and watch them
the flight
the dragons
who have lost their heads
I am feeling MUCH better on oxygen. Guess I have needed it for the last 5 weeks. It made me goofy to be hypoxic. It is nice to be able to THINK again. I wish that I had figured it out sooner. Presumably the ER doctor was not hypoxic, so I wonder why he didn’t test me. I told him my heart rate would jump to 124 when I got up and walked but he must have thought…. I have no idea. Now that I can think again, I think he should have walked me and tested my oxygen level.
Well, hopefully I have not lost too many brain cells. It’s nice to be able to find words again. They are not missing any more. Firing on all cylinders.
For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: speculate.
We walked North Beach yesterday, 2 or 3 miles out starting at high tide 1:30 pm. There was a very large dead octopus on the beach. There were three bald eagles in the trees above and then more in flight, arriving for a chance at this meal. There was a pair of bald eagles flying in tandem and then this bird. The white wing tips are the clue. I can only find one very large bird in North America with the wings with white feathers at the ends, and it’s not an eagle.
Do you care to speculate? If I am correct, it is a long way from the Cornell Bird Lab map of where it is supposed to live.
For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: key.
I don’t know why this picture is a key. It’s a mystery. You tell me why, I don’t know. Because the bush has started it’s spring growth and is covered with snow? Because the snow means winter and winter means spring and life goes on even when things are difficult or even horrible. Still, winter comes and then spring.
And this photograph wants to be part of the mystery too. I don’t know. Explain it to me.

For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: lost.
All the snow and early morning blue and white! The sun is lost! The sky is lost! My shadow has abandoned me!
Oh, there is the sun and my shadow is back.
For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: mystery.
This is a family before picture. Before what? Tomorrow will be the reveal.
