spiky

For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: spiky.

So this is a beach. Why spiky? The tide is way out. Watch where you step or sit, because these are the spiky bits!

Barnacles! The live ones are closed with the water out, but the dead shells are also sharp and spiky. Bits that aren’t spiky are slick!

I took these on North Beach last May. Wear shoes or at least carry them.

Next

For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: segue.

My daughter and I hiked at Deception Pass yesterday. We went up Goose Rock. Neither of us had hiked it before and the views were fabulous. I only had my cell phone.

My van is dead, cracked head block, so now I want to move the tow to my scion. Then I can tow the little Panda Minimum trailer. It is becoming clear that we all need to reduce airplane travel as part of our carbon footprint, so I will explore my Washington State Parks.

Have a very happy New Year’s Eve: and be careful out there.

wool socks and chocolate

For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: tradition.

One of our traditions now is wool socks and chocolate. My kids are now both young adults. When my daughter was in high school they told me no more plastic junk in the Christmas stockings. “We want wool socks and chocolate!” My daughter is a minimalist. She loves the Darn Tough socks. She has every intention of testing their lifetime guarantee.

I still show up with a yearly silly thing to play with on Christmas morning, but it’s feeling less ok to buy plastic, since it is made from oil. I will be making my own silly things soon, probably finger puppets.

the virtue of the disconnect

the virtue of the disconnect
learnt early
as a child

they say we are broken
wired wrong
enduring horror

he wakes at night
sleeps lightly

what was your childhood like?
how did you sleep?

it was not safe
we had to get up
leave in the night
gunshots

you survived your childhood

yes, I did

sleeping lightly saved you

yes, it did

you could rewire that
it takes a lot of time
to change the childhood wiring

or you could just
be ok

with sleeping lightly

mountain effect

Mount Tahoma, Mount Rainier, the mountain effect on the clouds. The sunrise last week revealed a cone shaped cloud above the mountain. The interaction between the earth and the sky is so beautiful…. and from this distance the mountain is small against the sky.

memory’s vault

For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: fumble.

Up near the bunker’s is Memory’s Vault. This is the first part of the poem A Lover’s Quarrel, about the longing for home. The poems are by Sam Hamill. It is a beautiful place.

I hope that no one fumbles with our hearts during the holidays and that we feel loved and home wherever we are….

Kinetic Koterie

For the Ragtag Daily Prompt: coterie.

I love the Great Port Townsend Bay Kinetic Sculpture Race.

There certainly is an in crowd, a coterie, but everyone is welcome! Hapless tourists wondering what the heck is happening are protected by the virtuous and kostumed Kinetic Kops. The sculptures have to go by land, by sea and through mud. Some of them are heavy and with the silly costumes people forget to stay out of the way! The sculptures have a water test and a brake test, down a steep hill. There is a parade, competitive bribery of judges and fierce competition to win the Most Mediocre!
