Here is Boa, in my kitchen, black with blue highlights. She used to sit in front of the vents when the 1979 propane furnace worked. Now I have a heat pump, high on the wall in the kitchen. The closest she can sit is up on the two chairs that tuck in the end of the counter. She is 12 years old and less interested in going outside this cold winter. She misses the kids and the other cat, who was hit by a car three years ago. She likes it when the kids come home, and when they leave again, she is a little bit blue…..

I remember as a teen our dog missed my brother when he went off to college. His first trip home she was so excited to see him – and then realized she was a bit annoyed that he’d left. And ignored him for about an hour. She was, after all, his best girl for a decade.

I was an exchange student and gone for a year when I was 17. Our cat was standoffish for a week. Then I turned a faucet to drip in the tub for her to drink. She didn’t drink. She got out of the tub, climbed in my lap after I sat on the floor and she purred and purred and purred.

  2. She’s a pretty kitty. I’m going to have the same experience next fall when we take our daughter to college. Right now she’s our cat’s primary caretaker and the cat will miss her terribly.

She’s beautiful. And anyone who thinks animals don’t experience loneliness and such either hasn’t lived with an animal, or hasn’t paid much attention.

She was not happy when I returned from taking my daughter to college. And blamed me for losing her….
