This is one of the native volunteers that has turned up in the lot I stopped mowing 14 years ago. Almost 15 now! The berries have all been stolen through the winter. It is spreading, with deer paths in between.

Here in Florida, we call it Mahonia. My plant as purple berries, though. And very sharp leaves.
Is it holly? I would imagine the berries would be “stolen” by birds and grazers, not human gatherers, right?
I don’t think it’s related: https://www.thespruce.com/oregon-grape-profile-3269178
And Oregon Grape is edible by humans too, sour, but one of the many free foods that we critters can munch and share from the land. Nice to stumble across this post from my town and one of our local heroes.
Awww, thank you! I needed that! I have tried the berries, tart but good.
It is also called Oregon grape-holly. But I don’t know if it is bontanically related.
